Unity Ceremony Ideas
One of our Wedding Wednesday topics recently was different ideas for unity ceremonies! We love how each and every wedding can be so different. There are so many pieces of your day that you can make unique and cater to your individual preferences. What you do for a unity ceremony is one of those pieces! Some couples go traditional with lighting candles, others more modern with releasing lanterns and some skip it altogether!
We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ideas and are sharing them here for you all!
Paint pouring on a blank canvas- this is fun and different and something you can hang in your home to view for years to come! The two paint colors blend and bring life to the empty canvas together, creating a modern-art representation of the marriage.
Unity candle- This is by far the most traditional unity ceremony option, so it’s perfect for couples who want that classic feel. Before the ceremony three candles are placed on the altar: two taper candles and one large candle in the middle. At the beginning of the ceremony a member from each family lights one of the taper candles. After you exchange vows, your each use one of the candles to light the unity candle.
Releasing a sky lantern- The couple would each write a wish for your future or a blessing for your marriage on the lantern and then let it soar into the skies after you say your vows. This is also a great option for couples who want all of their guests to be involved. Simply pass out the lanterns and have your guests write their own wishes!
Wash each other’s feet- While this ceremony has Christian origins, the purpose is one that is truly universal, an act of caregiving to symbolize your love and devotion to each other.
Tree planting- Taking soil from each of your hometown’s or from each of your parent’s homes and adding them together is a sweet sentiment. Like the tree you are planting, your relationship will need love and care to grow and bloom.
